Teamwork is one of the most important things an emergency department or hospital can do to improve patient safety. Teamwork has become a major focus in healthcare. Teamwork education and training has been shown to reduce the number of preventable medical errors. Healthcare systems that support effective teams can improve the quality of patient care and reduce workload issues. Effective teamwork and communication are key to ensuring reduction of errors in the Emergency Department (ED). However, after training is conducted, the desired behaviors need to be implemented primarily through on-the-job reinforcement and coaching. In-unit coaches become important change agents by assisting with the implementation and sustainability of teamwork initiatives.
